Pumpkin Patch, Apple Orchard and Saying Goodbye to a Furry Friend

As I mentioned last week, our P is for Pumpkin week ended with a trip to the apple orchard and pumpkin patch. It was a bad year for Michigan apples, and many orchards weren’t doing you-pick this year, including our favorite, Spicers Orchard, so we tried a new one, and although more expensive than Spicers, we all still had a nice time.

We’ve been learning about apples this week, and have plans to make these delicious apple and cheddar scones.

I also have some sad news to share this week. Our family cat, Patches, died on Wednesday. We don’t know exactly how old he was, but we know that he did have a long life, and he will be greatly missed. We moved him across the country twice, had a big emergency vet visit where he almost died soon after we got him, and we initially saved him from the animal shelter when we took him in from a friend, so we know we gave him a better life than he would have had, but it is still extremely hard to deal with losing him. He was such a good sport to deal with lots of fur and tail pulling and kisses and squeezes from Eleanore. We will all miss you Patches, aka El Patcho the cat.

Wow! Patches *was* a good sport! 😦

While the weather was great for apples here, there was a wind storm that destroyed about 300 trees (many of them U-Pick) early this season. Honeycrisp were particularly costly this year though there certainly didn’t seem to be any shortage.
